Live Blog with State Sen. Andrew Rice [OK-Sen]

by: Andrew for Oklahoma

Wed Aug 06, 2008 at 14:06 PM EDT

I never thought I'd be doing what I am today.

Running for public office was never an ambition of mine.  With a background in theology and missionary work, I always thought my life's work would be teaching religion and tolerance; I thought I'd be leading a life of service, not one of public service.

Many of you know why that all changed for me - it was when my brother was killed on 9/11 in the World Trade Center attack.  After working with victims' families groups to push for responsiveness and accountability in investigating why that terrible event happened, a new calling came before me.

I returned home to Oklahoma to start a family and a public advocacy organization.  When a state senate seat opened up in my neighborhood, I decided to run for that office and try to affect change from within state government.  After knocking on 20,000 doors, I was fortunate enough to win that election.

I love being a state senator.  I love having direct contact with my constituents and being able to take their concerns straight to the state capitol.  In my job, I've been able to reassure people in my district that government can be a force for good in people's lives.

When I was approached about running for U.S. Senate last year, I was initially reluctant.  Like many Oklahomans, I was wary about the Washington establishment.  But then I began to ask myself why Washington couldn't be a little more like my state senate district, where the needs and concerns of voters are taken directly to the seat of government.

Many of the fights I've been leading in the Oklahoma legislature are fights that need to be taken to Washington.  I've fought to expand health insurance coverage for children to close the gap between those who qualify for Medicaid and those who can afford private insurance.  My second TV ad, which you can see here, talks about my fight to hold insurance companies to their word in covering patients who enroll in potentially life-saving clinical trials.

I've fought to honor our veterans and our troops by battling hunger, homelessness, and shortfalls in benefits for those who have given so much to serve our country.  I've fought for common-sense solutions to our energy problems that will grow our economy while developing clean, renewable energy alternatives that will make us both energy independent and environmentally responsible.

My opponent, Jim Inhofe, has ignored the needs of Oklahomans on all of these issues, instead pursuing his own ideological agenda and putting the needs of corporate lobbyists ahead of his constituents.  He talks about how he doesn't change - but the problem is that while he hasn't changed, the world has.  He's out of touch with Oklahoma and with the new realities that have made his worldview a relic from the past.  For the future of Oklahoma, Jim Inhofe needs to retire.

More details about my campaign and our issues are on my website, www.andrewforoklahoma.com, and I'm happy to take your questions.

Welcome, Andrew
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the Senate Guru community and congratulations on your primary victory.

It was impressive to see the disparity in turnout between the recent Democratic primary and the recent Republican primary.  Are you detecting a particularly high level of enthusiasm among Democratic voters?

Hi Guru, thanks for having me here
Yes, we see an up-tick in enthusiasm here. Even more interesting is the shift among 18-35 year old voters away from the Republican party. This is an important development here. The GOP has definitely dominated the youth vote in Oklahoma for the last 15 years or so. But now we are finding a high level of disgruntlement with the extreme right ideology that dominates the Oklahoma GOP, perhaps more than other state GOP parties.

We had a very low turnout primary overall on July 29th (our presidential primary was in Feb.), but even still, 52,000 more  Democrats voted on July 29th than Republicans.

Hi
hi Senator Rice thanks for coming here today! As a gay teenager I face many stereotypes and obstacles everyday. What are your views on the LGBT community and if elected to the US Senate what will you do? Thanks Again for coming!

I am fully supportive of
protecting civil liberties for all Americans. I see protecting people's privacy rights in the same vein as gun rights, reproductive rights, and religious freedom. Keeping the government out of our business.

1804
Senator Rice,

I support your candidacy, but it is my understanding that you voted in favor of 1804.  Can you explain your reasoning for voting on this bill?

Also, what is your response to Rep. Sally Kern's recent comments that she is a "crusader for Judeo-Christian values?"

Thanks!

Ethan Jones
blogmaster, Sinister
http://www.sinisterblog.com

I supported HB1804 because it
was amended to be consistent with federal immigration law, and because it was a both fair and tough approach to dealing with businesses hiring and taking advantage of undocumented workers at the expense of both those workers and American workers.

I support the bi-partisan compromise immigration plan that the right-wing of the GOP killed in congress last year.

I don't pay much attention to Sally Kern, or what she says, but I do not find her approach to being a public servant to be very consistent with the Judeo-Christian values of compassion and humility.

Matthew Shepard Act
Would you as a senator pass the Matthew Shepard Act, which passed both houses of congress but is awaiting a Bush veto?

Yes, I support the
Matthew Shepard Act.

Education
What is your position on NCLB? How can we improve education in this country, from pre-K to adult ed?

NCLB was a mandate created by a
bureaucrat and was applied with a broad brush, and not funded.

I understand the idea of accountability behind the idea, but it is a fundamentally flawed piece of legislation.

My approach is to trust local educators to tell me what they need in their communities in rural and urban Oklahoma to give them a shot to better educate their students. This is a bottom-up approach, rather than someone at the Heritage Foundation coming up with some elitist, intellectual idea.

By the way, my wife was a headtstart kid in the early 1907s and the child of a single mother. She is now a practicing physician and a wonderful by-prouduct of that program.

Continuing ed
I would like to see more emphasis on ways to keep Americans educated to keep up with technology, changes in the economy, etc. I believe a comprehensive, well-funded program is needed at the federal level. What are your thoughts about dealing with education issues once in Washington?

[ Parent ]
I think it has to be a state-by-state
approach. I was in western Oklahoma last night and learned a lot about their challenges with access to technology and broadband and how that limits their students. This may not be as much an issue in some other states. So I am weary of a one size fits all approach from DC.

I would like to get to a point where we can at least make student loans interest free. Reducing the financial burden for higher-ed is not only a moral issue, but it is an economic development issue as well.

Support
Greetings, Senator Rice,

I'd first like to thank you for being here, and letting you proudly know that you are the first candidate that I have sent a campaign contribution to. However, recent poll numbers have Senator Inhofe ahead by wide margins. What do you say to those who may be wary of contributing to your campaign based on these numbers, and what plan do you and your campaign have to turn things around and win in November?

I really appreciate the support Anthony.
I'm grateful for your contribution and do not take it lightly.

My low ballot match up numbers have always been a by-product of my very low name ID statewide. My favorability numbers are strong among those who know me. The most recent poll was done just before my TV ad buy (we now are in the 3rd week of a 4 week ad buy). And still, I increased by 11 points in the soonerpoll and Inhofe dropped 8 points. It should also be noted that soonerpoll is a Oklahoma-based, Republican polling firm. We feel confident that my ballot match-up will be higher in the next poll because of my TV buy and my increased name ID.

The other piece of this is that Inhofe is stuck at 48-52% in all the public and internal polling. He was unable to move his numbers with a $400k TV ad buy in June (we think he must be worried to buy TV in June). The local media seems pretty timid to report on his very bad veterans, medicare, and student loan votes, and very few people here know about the $1 Million he has taken from big oil, and given them billions in tax giveaways in return. His numbers will drop when we begin communicating this, and he and I will be in a dogfight at that point.

Employee Free Choice Act
Sean Fitzpatrick here.  I had the pleasure of interviewing you over the phone at WSDP - Plymouth, Michigan.  I want to thank you again for speaking with me.

Of course, I had more questions than I could fit in the 20 minute interview.  The most glaring miss: Do you support the Employee Free Choice Act?

Yes,
I support it.

Jumping off...

energy
We needed to find an alternative energy source back in the 80's but we didn't. Instead we chose to increase our oil use and our debt. Now we face the same problem but only worse. Some are suggesting that we drill offshore and in places like ANWR, and even give millions in tax cuts to the oil companies. If we do this I think we would be making worse mistakes than we did back in the 80's. What do you think will get us out of this energy crises?

You can see more...
...on Sen. Rice's energy stance on our website:

and our news section and blog have a lot of info, as well.

Hi, Senator Rice
Don't know if you're still live blogging. Guess not (it's 10:22 pm EST for me now)

I have a question pertaining your strong run on environmental issues, especially since the incumbent you're running against seems to be the antithesis of progressive environmentalism.

How do you make Oklahomans support strong environmental protection laws and policies to curb global warming in a state that's primarily rural, conservative and suspicious of government intervention? And how do you work the natural disasters that frequent your state (i.e. tornadoes) to climate change?

OK can benefit big-time from alternative energy investment
DTM,B - Senator Rice's liveblog ended earlier this afternoon, but allow me to put out there that the best way to convince Oklahomans that environmental protection is critical is to highlight how Oklahoma could financially benefit enormously from investment in alternative energies.

Rice discusses alternative energy on his website.  Check it out, and contact the campaign with any questions.  I'm sure they'll be happy to respond to any inquiries.
