Saturday Rundown

by: Senate Guru

Sat May 10, 2008 at 14:32 PM EDT

  • North Carolina: Holy freakin' cow!  A new Rasmussen Reports poll sees State Senator Kay Hagan with an albeit statistically insignificant lead (you read that right - a lead!) on Republican Elizabeth Dole, 48-47.  Wow.  A statistical dead heat is one heck of a primary victory bump.  Very simply, we can oust Dole.  Contribute to Hagan via the Expand the Map! ActBlue page now to help. (HT: andtun1)

  • Kentucky: Mitch McConnell quite literally (and I mean literally) wakes up thinking about obstructionism.

  • Oregon: The latest Rasmussen Reports numbers see Republican Gordon Smith's lead against his Democratic challengers crumbling.  Smith is in a statistical dead heat against Speaker Jeff Merkley, 45-42.  Smith also has a six-point lead on Steve Novick, 47-41.  Any illusion of security enjoyed by any Senate Republicans is quickly eroding.  Smith feels threatened, and given the closeness of the race, feels more threatened by Merkley, so what does Smith do?  Why, Smith launches a misleading attack ad against Merkley, of course.  Smith has taken loads of lobbyist money and has voted in favor of corporate interests time and time again.  And he's scared of having to defend his record.  It will be awfully fun to watch Smith squirm in the general election debates.

  • New Hampshire: Popular former Governor Jeanne Shaheen wants to chart a new course in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Something tells me that Sprintin' John Sununu is perfectly comfortable with the current, George W. Bush-charted course.

  • Nebraska: Former Republican businessman Tony Raimondo wants to head drill-first into ANWR.  Fortunately, the Democratic primary also includes a Democrat, Scott Kleeb.

  • New Mexico: The NM-GOP 2008 Senate primary between Republicans Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce continue to be all about negative attacks.  Outstanding.

  • Massachusetts: Republican Congressional loser and Senate ankle-shouter Jim Ogonowski is caught in a lie by the Boston Globe:

"He's been in Washington 24 years, and he's passed eight pieces of legislation," Ogonowski said. ...

Kerry's campaign has released a list of 13 bills the campaign said Kerry has authored and has seen passed since 2001.

It is remarkable that Senator John Kerry has managed to pass a baker's dozen of bills in an era marked by a Republican majority suffocating Democratic voices and then a Republican minority breaking filibuster records and obstructing anything that moves.  It is, however, unremarkable, that a Republican would lie about Senator Kerry's record.

  • Maine: Republican Susan Collins' rhetoric is supportive of benefits and health care for veterans, but Collins has voted against improving benefits and health care for veterans on numerous occasions.  Just another Susan Collins hypocrisy.

  • Colorado: The Republican tag team of Backwards Bob Schaffer and Dick Wadhams has collectively lost its mind.

  • Oklahoma: A new list of Oklahoma City's Sleaziest Locations ranks at #4 "Anywhere Jim Inhofe is speaking."

  • South Dakota: The 2008 Senate campaign website for Senator Tim Johnson has a new look.  Check it out.  (HT: Badlands Blue)

  • Louisiana: Businessman Paul Hollis, the Republican primary opponent for John Neely Kennedy, has put up a new campaign website.  Given that Hollis has been a Republican for considerably longer than JNK and that Hollis has family ties to the GOP establishment, it will indeed distract JNK from Senator Mary Landrieu.  (HT: Daily Kingfish)

hell of a day at the polls.
makes me feel a hundred percent better about our chances for a blowout.

especially considering many of rasmussen's polls have been pessimistic outliers... though i'll keep fingers crossed until another pollster chimes in...

It's difficult to get the news from poems

but men die every day for lack of what is found there

    --William Carlos Williams

    Exactly what I was thinking.
Exactly what I was thinking. Those two poll numbers made me very, very happy. Lets hope we see confirmation from other polls and that puts the fight in these races.

    [ Parent ]
Do you know how happy I am today?
My preferred Senate candidate Jeff Merkley is polling within three points of Smith!!! It's a statistical dead heat! The fact that Merkley is polling so well against Smith this early on in the race lends weight to his candidacy. I will be so happy when we oust Smith with a great progressive leader like Merkley!

    Magic 60
I never thought I'd see the day NC became a top pickup opportunity, nor could I have ever imagined the possibility would emerge so early!

I always thought Oregon was a possibility, but like North Carolina, I didn't think it would close up so soon.

Not so sure about Minnesota Maine and Texas, and I need to see more from Alaska. But another six seats is very probable.

    Holy freaking crap
I bet Brad Smith, Richard Moore and a whole host of other NC pol's that took a pass and kicking themselfs now.

I have to say NC up there with Maine, Minnesota, Alaska and Oregon now as very possible pickups if our canidates and party's play it right. Very, very exiting.

I think we have a very real possibility of picking up 8 seats and there are some underdogs that we could win in such as Texas and Nebraska.

This is going to be a exiting cycle!

I feel bad for giving her no credit
Since she wasn't a top-tier recruit. But she's definitely put NC into a solid tier-2 race moving up to tier-1 (if Schumer doesn't have it there already).

I seriously hope Schumer doesn't have a deal with Dole to not have the DSCC go for her if the NRSC stays away from him. Thats how Ensign got a free pass in 06, Reid was hesitant to go after him because they come from the same state. These kind of odd agreements exist all the time. I think theres been some controversy with Democratic House members not campaigning against bordering GOP congressmen. Weird truces exist, so lets hope Schumer actually wants to go for it.

    [ Parent ]
The DSCC is all for pursuing NC full force
From a DSCC e-mail from Executive Director J.B. Poersch on Thursday:

After Tuesday's primaries, the sleeper race of the 2008 cycle isn't such a secret anymore.  Our prospects for an upset in North Carolina have never been better.

With record-setting turnout that bodes extremely well for our chances in November, Democrats there chose Kay Hagan, a businesswoman, attorney, mother and five-term state senator, to be our Senate nominee.  The latest NC poll shows her trailing rubber-stamp-Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole by just seven scant points, a shockingly small margin in a race Dole was once expected to win easily.

The race hasn't even gotten started, but Dole's favorability numbers are already below the key 50% threshold, with a full 41% of Tar Heel State voters holding an unfavorable view of the Senator.  The numbers will only get worse for her as the public learns about Senator Dole's real record of support for the special interests, not the public interest.

She voted against increasing the minimum wage.  She voted against expanding health care coverage for kids.  And she even voted against serious ethics reform.  In fact, she supported the radical Bush agenda at a whopping 92% clip.

Senator Dole also took more than $235,000 in campaign money from the pharmaceutical industry, then turned around and voted against letting the government negotiate for lower drug prices from those same companies.

With that kind of record, I think it's safe to say that Senator Dole is against just about everything you and I and the people of North Carolina want and need.

We've put together the facts you should know about Elizabeth Dole's real record.  Click here to take a look.

Kay Hagan is a great Democrat and a great candidate to topple Dole.  As a leader in the state Senate, she has developed a statewide reputation as a moderate who can run and win in November.  Her favorability ratings are already as high as Dole's, and Hagan doesn't carry nearly the same level of unfavorable baggage.

Unlike Dole, Hagan is a long-term resident of North Carolina.  She raised her three kids in Raleigh and was active in the business and civic community there.  As state senator, Hagan expanded health care for kids and provided vital equipment and body armor to the state's National Guard.  Now she's ready to bring her record of accomplishment and her lifetime of service to Washington.

Kay Hagan is just the kind of candidate we need to take back this seat from another Bush Republican.  All of us here at the DSCC couldn't be more excited to work with her to make it happen.

    Sincerely,
    J.B. Poersch
    Executive Director

P.S.  Entrenched Republican incumbents like Elizabeth Dole are bound to have loads more campaign money than our Democratic challengers.  The DSCC's job is to level that playing field but we need your help to do it.  Election Day is closer than you think.

    [ Parent ]
    Polls
My first thought on seeing these two polls is, Rasmussen is skewing Democrat. And their Oregon poll also has Obama up over McCain 52-38, which does seem like a pretty strong lead for a swing state. But their presidential tracking poll has generally put McCain in the lead (Obama currently has a one point lead, which is less than most other polls). And they have McCain up over both Dems in Wisconsin. And, their generic congressional ballot has Dem 46 Rep 41 nationally, which puts the Dems way below where they are in other generic ballot polls. So they aren't showing any overall Democratic lean in their polling. Bottom line: these polls are shocking, but probably trustworthy. I mean, as trustworthy as any can be at this point.

    A swing state???
Since when is Oregon a swing state at the presidential level?

    [ Parent ]
    Agreed
I hate calling states like Oregon or my home state Minnesota a "swing state".  They are Democratic leaning at the presidential level and haven't really swung Republican in quite some time.  Same with Pennsylvania.  To be a swing state, you actually have to swing....

Nevada, New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, swing states.  In reality, there arent that many swing states.  There are a lot of competitive states though.

    [ Parent ]
    Uhhh...
    Last 12 elections

    Minnesota - 11D - 1R
    Pennsylvania - 8D - 4R
    Wisconsin - 7D - 5R
    Oregon - 6D - 6R
    Iowa - 5D - 7R
    New Mexico - 5D - 7R
    Nevada - 4D - 8R

Wisconsin is less of a swing state than Oregon if you base it off of criteria.

    [ Parent ]
    Inhofe. Needs. to Leave.
I was about to say "Inhofe needs to get out" until I realized that would, while possibly quite appropriate, also be way too funny, especially if "more" were tagged onto the end of that.

Finish the Deal!  Help elect Democrats in districts we narrowly lost in 2006!
    Democratic Future ActBlue page

    Polls
I knew North Carolina was more competitive than most people thought.

I didn't realize that Oregon was looking so good though.
