KY-Sen: Exclusive: Mongiardo & Conway Appeal to the Progressive Netroots

by: Senate Guru

Mon Aug 24, 2009 at 13:56 PM EDT

The 2010 Senate race in Kentucky features one of the most competitive Democratic primaries of the cycle.  The major Democratic candidates in the race are Lieutenant Governor Dan Mongiardo and state Attorney General Jack Conway.  Because Democrats across the country, and the progressive netroots especially, care deeply about who will carry the Party's banner in this competitive 2010 Senate race, I contacted both campaigns to ask a simple question:

Why should the progressive netroots support your campaign in Kentucky's 2010 Democratic Senate primary?

Below are their responses.  Please share your thoughts on their responses in the comments.  Later this week, I will run a post featuring responses to the same question from the major Democratic primary candidates in the 2010 Senate race in Ohio (Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher and Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner).
Dan Mongiardo
Kentucky's Lieutenant Governor

http://www.drdan2010.com/

Dan Mongiardo

As the one candidate in this race who supported Barack Obama in the Democratic primary and general election, I am also the only candidate in this race with a proven track record of standing up for working families.

Born in the coal fields of Eastern Kentucky, after medical school, I returned home to provide needed medical care to rural and underserved communities. Helping establish a free health clinic, I have seen the suffering caused by our broken health care system.  That's why I strongly believe we need healthcare reform now. Where you live or how much money you have in your wallet should not determine the level of medical care you receive.

As State Senator and Lt. Governor, I have worked to expand children's healthcare, provide affordable prescription drugs for seniors, and been a leader in making medical records electronic which will save billions in cost and save thousands in lives. As the only Democratic doctor in the Senate, I will fight to ensure every American has access to affordable quality healthcare.

But we also need to create jobs and help hard-pressed working families who are struggling to get by. As State Senator, Lt. Governor, and U.S. Senate candidate, I am proud to have received the support of the working men and women of organized labor. As the one candidate in this race who has honored a picket line, I strongly support efforts to make it easier for employees to organize and for greater regulation of Wall Street.

In 2004, despite most Democratic insiders saying it was impossible, I took on Jim Bunning because I could not stand idly by while the policies of Jim Bunning and George Bush were hurting Kentucky families. Despite George Bush winning Kentucky by 20 points, thanks to grassroots activists, union members and working families, we came within 1.4% --a mere 23,000 votes-- of upsetting Jim Bunning...and along the way, we received more votes than any Democrat in Kentucky political history.

For our 2010 campaign, we are putting together a grassroots campaign second to none. We may not be the establishment candidate, but we have the support of hard-working Kentuckians who want a Senator in Washington who will fight for them. I ask the netroots community to join our campaign at www.drdan2010.com to bring needed change to Washington to improve the lives of these families. Together, we can build a better America for everyone.

Jack Conway
Kentucky's Attorney General

http://jackconway.org/

Jack Conway

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss our campaign for United States Senate.

The best predictor of the future is to look at one's record. I am the only candidate in the Democratic primary for the United States Senate who has a record of getting results and standing up for the Democratic ideals of opportunity for all.

As Attorney General, I crafted sweeping legislation to protect our children from Internet predators; launched a task force to tackle the scourge of prescription drugs; tripled elder abuse investigations; stood up to protect our environment; increased recoveries for our Kentucky Medicaid Program by 600 percent; saved taxpayers more than $161 million, including $80 million in utility costs; and took on big oil when they gouged consumers at the pump.

Kentucky deserves a Senator who will continue to stand up to the special interests. The only way we will have real insurance reform, create jobs, educate our children, protect our seniors, and develop the new energy sources of tomorrow that include Kentucky coal as part of the solution, is to elect a Senator that is willing to be counted and challenge conventional wisdom.

I have a record of showing up to work every day and fighting for Kentucky families, while my opponent has relentlessly run for public office, produced few results, and practices the politics of division. Kentucky deserves better.

We are excited about our prospects - having raised more money than all our opponents combined, having the endorsements of Congressman Ben Chandler and John Yarmuth, and the backing of labor organizations representing more than 100,000 Kentuckians. I would be honored to have your support and I promise I won't forget my Kentucky values when I get to Washington.

I notice Dr. Dan doesn't mention a few things.
He leaves out his support of that atrocious gay hate amendment (he even cosponsored the damn thing) and his opposition to cap and trade, even borrowing conservative talking points on cap and tax.  He's definately not the choice for the progressive netroots.

Check out Blue Arkansas:

Good points!
I didn't know that about Dr. Dan.  I was more impressed by Dr. Dan's response, but I guess what he "accidentally" left out is the bigger news.

Good read: http://retiredamericans.org/ht... (pages 2 thru 5)

Positives:
*Smart guy - he's a doctor
*Has proven he can get the votes - lost by only 1.4%, in a Bush year no less!
*Passionate about healthcare reform (has a good record of info on Wikipedia)
*Supported Sotomayor
*Wants cheaper drugs

Negatives:
*Running on the same exact platform as he did in 2004 - health care.  Not that this is a bad thing, except A) if health care reform gets passed, his strongest platform becomes moot, B) he didn't win in 2004.
*Opposes Gay Marriage and Civil Unions (however he is in line with his constituency considering most Kentucky residents don't support them either)
*Opposes cap and trade (urged the KY delegation in the US House to vote against it)...said it would decimate the KY economy
*Staunch supporter of gun rights.  Invited to and gave a speech at the 137th Annual NRA Meeting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Not a progressive but I'll offer a comment - I live in Phoenix, Arizona
I am quite disappointed that both Democrat US Senate candidates mention nothing about the biggest political drain of blood and money around, the continued occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan by the US Army.

If either of these fine candidates think that come November 2010 that the voters of Kentucky are going to be raving fans of the Democrat Party (especially as a result of whatever health care programs are legislated by election day) I do think they will be surprised.

If Rand Paul prevails as the Republican Party nominee I foresee that he will prevail on the US Army occupation issue.

As Dennis Miller says: Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Interesting background
It's refreshing to see someone return home to open a free health clinic, and help underprivileged people. More people who have abilities like his should do that! I'm glad we have a President standing up for working families.

Ronnie
Good point! I noticed Conway's post mentioned nothing about what he has done for his community other than his brief term as AG.  What did he do for a living before running for his first office in 2002.  I assume he practiced law.  If he left this out I would think he did little for his community and worried about making money instead of being a leader for the under privileged!  As a progressive I believe in giving back and helping those that are not as well off as others.  Anyone out there know his background.

Mongiardo seems to be a genuine person, Conway still much to be learned.

Re:
Good point, the Attorney General's bio doesn't mention anything about his community involvement. I wonder if both candidates would respond to our postings to discuss prior community involvement.
