OH-Sen: Expect a Voinovich Retirement Announcement Tomorrow

by: Senate Guru

Sun Jan 11, 2009 at 16:12 PM EST

In the last week, speculation ran rampant over whether Ohio Republican George Voinovich would announce a re-election bid or a retirement.  It was reported that he would be having a big conference call today, Sunday, with major donors to inform them of his 2010 plans.  So what's the decision?  Politico has the scoop:

Voinovich to announce retirement

Ohio Republican George Voinovich is expected to announce Monday that he won't seek reelection to the Senate in 2010.  ...

A Voinovich spokesman would only confirm that he will make an announcement Monday on his future. But a Senate Republican leadership aide said that Voinovich's planned retirement is "real" and an announcement will come soon.

We'll know for sure tomorrow, but it looks likely that we can add Voinovich to a list of Senate Republican retirees that already features Florida's Mel Martinez, Kansas' Sam Brownback, and Missouri's Kit Bond.  Further, Texas' Kay Bailey Hutchison may resign before 2010 to focus on her gubernatorial campaign.  And we're less than two weeks into 2009.  (Iowa's Chuck Grassley, Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter, Kentucky's Jim Bunning, and Oklahoma's Tom Coburn are still all potential retirees.)  New NRSC Chair John Cornyn must be losing it.

Former Congressmen Rob Portman and John Kasich are the two Republicans most frequently mentioned as stand-ins should Voinovich retire, but both are flawed.  Portman served in George W. Bush's administration as both U.S. Trade Representative and Director of the Office of Management and Budget.  Think it'll be hard to tie Portman to Bush's economic record?  And how do Ohioans feel about the trade agreements that Bush supported?  As for Kasich, his political career peaked a decade ago as House Budget Chairman considering a Presidential run.  Since leaving the House in 2001, Kasich spent time as managing director of Lehman Brothers' Columbus division, wingnutted it up on Fox News, and demurred from an '06 gubernatorial run.

On the Democratic side, the top choice appears to be Congressman Tim Ryan, though Ryan would be sacrificing his seat on House Appropriations if he ran.  Other Ohio Democrats on the fairly strong bench are Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, and Congresspeople Betty Sutton and Zack Space.

Ohio has shifted blue in recent years, boding well for Democrats.  2006 saw Democratic then-Congressman Sherrod Brown beat incumbent Republican Senator Mike DeWine by double-digits, 56-44, and Democratic then-Congressman Ted Strickland absolutely crush then-Secretary of State Ken Blackwell for the Governor's office, 60-37.  2008 saw Ohio's electoral votes go to Democrat Barack Obama by a 51-47 margin, and saw three Republican-held House seats switch Parties to the blue column.

We should know for sure tomorrow what Voinovich's 2010 plans are.  Stay tuned.

This is fantastic!
I hope Jenniffer Bruner, the SOS of Ohio runs. Fisher would be fine too though, as long as we win, I not to picky about whom our candidate is. Any word on what Paul Hackett is up to? He seems to have dissapeared since 06. Any chance he might be interested in this seat?

Oh God, please be true!
2010 is gonna be FUN!!!

Oh Yeah, Definitely
Cornyn's term as NRSC Chair is starting off the way we all want it to. Republicans must be begging even John Ensign or Liddy Dole to come back. The latter of course can't since she's no longer a Senator.

[ Parent ]
In 2006- Liddy Dole was able to recruit strong candidates in
Open Democratic held Seats in Maryland(Steele),Minnesota(Kennedy),and New Jersey(Kean Jr.)- They all lost badly. Democrats picked up 6 seats by knocking off 6 Incumbent Republican Senators.
Democrats recruited the Strongest candidate to knock off Santorum(PA)-Bob Casey Jr, DeWine(OH)-Sherrod Brown, Chaffee(RI)-Sheldon Whitehouse, Talent(MO)-Clair McCaskill, Burns(MT)-Jon Tester. We got lucky in Virginia due to George Allen's Macaca gaffe.

In 2008- Neither Democratic US Senators up for re-election in 2008 decided to retire. The only seat the NRSC targeted in 2008 was in Louisiana but they had to convince John Kennedy to switch parties and they still lost. The Democrats were able to pick up 3 Open Republican Seats(VA,NM,and CO) due to weak Republican/Strong Democratic recruitment. We recruited the strongest candidate to knock off Sununu(NH)-Shaheen,and Stevens(AK)-Begich. The Anti GOP wave helped us in Minnesota and Oregon. Dole's lackluster campaigning helped us in North Carolina.

In 2010- Neither Democratic US Senator up for re-election in 2010 is planning to retire. Red State Democratic US Senators Blanche Lincoln(AR) and Byron Dorgan(ND) will be getting a free pass as well as perenial vulnerable Democratic incumbents such as Boxer(CA),Murray(WA),and Feingold(WI). Republican challengers in CO,IL,NV,and NY Special will be in the same situation as Steele(MD),Kennedy(MN),and Kean(NJ). Democrats will knock off Republican incumbents in KY(Bunning) and NC(Burr) and pick up OPEN GOP seats in FL,MO,OH,and PA.

Ambinder was dead right
about Voinovich so maybe he's right about Grassley too. What an unbelievable year it's going to be for us in the Senate in two years. What a two years this is already shaping up to be. I'm excited.

If Grassley and Specter leave- Their will be
no Republican US Senator elected in 1980(During the Reagan Revolution left).

All of the Republican US Senators elected in 1986 including Kit Bond(MO)are in their 70's. Shelby(AL)will be 76 in 2010. McCain(AZ) will be 74 in 2010.

Robert Bennett(UT) class of 1992 will be 77 in 2010.
Jim Bunning(KY)class of 1998 will be 79 in 2010. George Voinovich- class of 1998 will be 74 in 2010.

Republicans hold onto Alabama(if Shelby retires) and Utah(if Bennett retires).
In addition to FL,MO,and OH. Democrats will pick up AZ(if McCain retires),IA(if Grassley retires)and NH(if Gregg retires). Bunning(KY)and Burr(NC)are the most vulnerable Republican US Senators facing re-election in 2010.

The Republican "bench," such as it is...
It speaks volumes about the state of the GOP in crucial states like Ohio when the two "most frequently mentioned" candidates to replace the senior U.S. Senator are people like Rob Portman and John Kasich.

Who else does the GOP have, really? Every statewide elected official in Ohio is a Democrat except State Auditor Mary Taylor. Mary Taylor is no Claire McCaskill, and isn't going to make the jump from Auditor to Senator anytime soon.

There just aren't many popular Republicans with statewide name recognition in Ohio. Not a good place to start.

Same thing goes in Missouri.
Lt Governor Peter Kinder is the only Republican statewide elected official in Missouri left.

[ Parent ]
Potential candidates
For this seat could include Richard Cordray, Kevin Boyce, Mike Coleman, Dennis Kucinich, Charlie Wilson, or Marcy Kaptur.

What about Tim Ryan, Eric Fingerhut, Lee Fisher, Jennifer Brunner
Zack Space,Tony Hall, and Tom Sawyer. When is Traficant getting out???

[ Parent ]
Fingerhut and Hall
Would be the weakest candidates for us. BTW, who is Tom Sawyer?

Check out my sites-http://conservativestateproject.blogspot.com/
http://2010garacetracker.wetpa...
http://oldrockbands.wetpaint.com/

[ Parent ]
He is the former Congressman from the Akron Area-
He lost his seat in 2002 because of redistricting- His Akron Based District was merged in with Jim Traficant/Tim Ryan's Youngstown District- Sawyer lost to Ryan in the Democratic Primary due to Sawyer's stance on NAFTA-
In 2006 Sawyer tried to make a comeback when he decided to run for Congress in Sherrod Brown's old Congressional District which included parts of Sawyer's Akron Base. Sawyer lost the Democratic nomination to Betty Sutton. Sawyer later was elected to the Ohio State Board of Education and is now won an election to the Ohio State Senate.
