OH-Sen: Will Voinovich Announce Retirement Next Week?

AOL News political blogger Matt Lewis:

I am hearing rumors coming out of Ohio that Senator [George] Voinovich is seriously considering making an announcement next week that he won't be running for re-election. According to my sources, Rob Portman would likely be the Republican to replace him. This also opens up the GOP gubernatorial nomination for former Republican Congressman John Kasich.

I wonder what new NRSC Chair John Cornyn's Mylanta bill will be this weekend. With Mel Martinez, Sam Brownback, and now Kit Bond out the door; with Kay Bailey Hutchison ready to bolt for a gubernatorial bid; and, with Jim Bunning, Chuck Grassley, and Arlen Specter all in their late 70's and potentially ready to retire at any moment, the prospect of another swing state Senator in Ohio's George Voinovich possibly preparing a retirement announcement is very unwelcome news for the Republican Party.

Of course, as Lewis notes, the OH-GOP would have competent Voinovich stand-ins in Portman and Kasich. However, Ohio Democrats have a strong and deep bench and would make the most of an open seat. Potential Democratic candidates include Congresspeople Tim Ryan & Betty Sutton, Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, and Columbus Mayor Mike Coleman.

Rob Portman was Bush's point man on trade. Can you imagine running in a state like Ohio with that record? If Portman goes up against a Sherrod Brown style economic populous he'll be completely destroyed. Do you think we should send him thank you notes when he declares?

Chabot lost 52-48 in '08.

I mentioned him because there is really nobody else here other than Schmidt(fat chance), Jordan, LaTourette(another FC), and Bohener. Maybe Mary Turner, but she is probably aiming for the Governorship in 2014. The GOP is in shambles here. Since Chabot has nothing left to lose, he could make a run for it.

Is not making a comeback. He was unpopular during his terms in office from 1995-2007. He was also a joke as a Senator.

What a difference a decade makes.

Before 1990
Democrats held every Statewide elected office in OHIO.
In 1990- They lost the Governorship and Secretary of State.
In 1994- Metzenbaum's Seat went Republican(DeWine)- and every Statewide Office went Republican.
In 1998- Glenn's Seat went Republican(Voinovich)- Looking at the US House Delegation.

1994- Chabot(OH-1),Cremeans(OH-2),Ney(OH-18),and LaTourette(OH-19)were elected in Democratic held US House Seats. In 1996 everyone except for Cremeans(OH)won re-election. Dems also unseated Hoke(OH-10)-Dennis Kucinich.
2002- Republicans picked up OH-2(Hall-D)-Mike Turner. and redistricted Tom Sawyer out of office.

2006- US Senate Brown unseated DeWine. Strickland/Fisher elected Governor/Lt Governor, Democrats elected the Secretary State,Attorney General,and Treasurer. Zack Space elected to OH-18(Ney-R)
2008- Dreihaus(OH-1),Kilroy(OH-15),and Boccieri(OH-16)were elected.
2010- Democrats pick up Voinovich Seat.

I come home from school and learn Bond will retire and Voinovich might be next! Now all we need is for Specter to call it quits too. We will wipe them out in 2010! Bunning, Burr, Martinez, Specter, Voinovich, Bond, Brownback (if we get Sebelius), they will be wallowing in the mid to low thirties for years! This is Karl Rove's permanent majority, only it could be ours! Well, probably not, but we will be sitting pretty for a while.

McCain could face a Primary

From JD Hayworth in 2010 and there is a possibility that he could knock off McCain. Speaking of Grassley, I expect him to retire thus setting up a matchup between Dave Loseback and Jim Nussle where Loseback wins 57%-41%.

Retirements

The retirement that would mean the most would be Grassley. We could have still defeated Bond (though now it's easier to pick up the seat), and could still beat Specter and Voinovich. We don't have much hope to picking up Iowa unless Grassley retires, then all bets are off.

Though, I'm sure Republicans had the same feelings about Indiana and North Dakota.

Good point

Though I don't think we need to worry about that. Bunning is so egotistical that he thinks he can win a landslide election next year. I'm sure he not only will run for re-election, he will announce it at a press conference which includes a former Bob Dole staffer, Todd Palin, and George Bush's dog.
