Early Tuesday Morning Rundown

by: Senate Guru

Tue Oct 13, 2009 at 02:00 AM EDT

  • California: A new Field poll shows Senator Barbara Boxer in very solid shape for re-election with strong double-digit leads against potential Republican opponents.  Senator Boxer tops failed businesswoman and golden parachute recipient Carly Fiorina 49-35 and wingnut Chuck DeVore 50-33.  The poll also puts Senator Boxer's favorable-unfavorable ratings at 48-39.  Though a March Field poll showed Fiorina leading DeVore in the 2010 Republican Senate primary by 12 points, her lead is down to a statistically insignificant 1 point, 21-20.  Good news for Senator Boxer, and bad news for Carlyfornia.

  • North Carolina: A new Public Policy Polling poll puts vulnerable freshman Republican backbencher Richard "Bank Run" Burr's approve-disapprove at a mediocre 36-35.  Independent voters give Burr a net negative 36-39 approve-disapprove.  Burr's saving grace is that he currently holds a low double digit lead against top potential Democratic challengers.  Burr leads Congressman Bob Etheridge 44-33, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall 44-32, former Lieutenant Governor Dennis Wicker 44-30, attorney Kenneth Lewis 44-30, Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy 45-29, and former State Senator Cal Cunningham 46-27.  Meanwhile, word is that former State Senator Cunningham is about to officially enter the 2010 Senate race.

  • Nevada: A new Mason-Dixon poll shows Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid still lagging against lesser-known Republican challengers.  Senator Reid trails former NV-GOP Chair Sue Lowden 39-49 and two-time political loser Danny Tarkanian 43-48.  In the 2010 GOP Senate primary, 23% of respondents favored Lowden, 21% favored Tarkanian, 9% favored wingnut former state assemblywoman Sharron Angle, and several other Republicans got 1% or less.  In other news (that is sure to hurt her standing among Nevadans), Sue Lowden is being pegged as a supporter of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump.  That's like going to Wisconsin and saying you hate Vince Lombardi.

  • Florida: Gov. Charlie Crist really is a hardcore conserva-... jeez, I can't type that with a straight face.

  • New York: A Queens columnist reminds New Yorkers that Republican former Gov. and possible 2010 Senate candidate George Pataki was a horrible fiscal manager:

Our state became number two nationally among the states, with each resident responsible for $3,515 of the $50 billion dollar total debt. Under "TaxPaki," state debt grew from $27 billion dollars in 1995 to $50 billion dollars in 2006. NYS public authorities debt grew to $72 billion dollars.

The columnist closes with the sentence: "No intelligent voter would elect him Senator."  Yowzah.  No doubt, this column will be a favorite forward for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and her campaign.

  • Kentucky: Remember the embarrassment Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo faced when audio of him cursing out his boss, Gov. Steve Beshear, became public?  Well, reportedly, there are more tapes, including audio of Mongiardo likening his relationship with Beshear to that of the husband of a "whore."  Mongiardo's 2010 Democratic primary opponent, state Attorney General Jack Conway, should just stand back and let Mongiardo's self-flagellation continue unabated.

  • Kansas: Retired newspaper editor Charles Schollenberger is officially entering the 2010 open seat Senate race.  To get to know Mr. Schollenberger better, watch this interview of him conducted by progressive blog Forward Kansas.

  • Louisiana: Kudos to the Young Democrats of Louisiana!

  • Utah: Joe the Plumber is getting involved in the 2010 Republican Senate primary, backing businesswoman Cherilyn Eager against incumbent Republican Robert Bennett and fellow Republican primary challenger state Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.  Ron Paul disciple James Williams is also running in the crowded Republican primary.

  • Pennsylvania: The Real Arlen Specter unveils its first in a new series of web videos, "The Arlen Inspecter."  This installment looks at how recent Republican Arlen Specter is relying on contributions from Democrats to pay back his former Republican donors seeking refunds:

  • Rankings: We have a three-fer for you.  First, WaPo's Cillizza offers his latest Senate Line, on which Delaware shoots right to the top of the charts.  Second, Rothenberg posts his latest Senate Ratings, on which he sees Delaware and Nevada becoming increasingly precarious holds for Democrats.  Third, and finally, Politico posted what it sees as the most endangered seats in the 2010 Senate landscape.

  • This is just messed up.

    Lowden supports Yucca???!!!!??!!?
That is unbelievable! What an idiot! Thats about the only reason I like reid at all anymore! Hopefully the GOPers will all come out in favor of Yucca! What a dips#$t she is. Good for you Sue, hopefully Danny follows suit. Ms. Angle is too crazy, she can't win either way.

You know what I don't get...
Why hasn't the netroots really rallied against Mongiardo yet?  Beyond this, there's his stance on gay marriage and his stance on cap and trade that should be anathema to any progressive.  I understand the Guru not taking a side in the primary, but I don't see why the folks at OpenLeft or Dailykos haven't jumped in on this one yet.

    I agree
I was nuetral, but the more I hear, the more I support Conway. Now I'm 100% for him!

    [ Parent ]
    my line
overview: we all know the famous quote "all politics is local" well I believe that the 2010 elections well be local meaning based off existing patterns. for the sake of brevity if i don't list it it definatley safe w no variable

    my safe d's

NY (gilbrand) with no primary Gilbrand should cruise. the variable ny gov race well Patterson survive primary and drag gilbrand down. I do not think Patterson well be running. the ultimate factor ny is just to expensive for what it costs to win in ny my guess 50 million that can be better spent in CO,NH,NV,KY.

IL -- I see Giannoulias winning the primary and the general election easily. variables Blago trial the guy well try to take as many down as possible. a different variable kirk is heckuva lot more liberal than the average gop primary voter i see a right wing independent comming the strong d tilt of this state a feb primary long time to heal wounds from the fight both are the overiding factors

    likeley d

CT Dodd--Dodd holds a lot of iou's to play plus ct is a d state. variable is the countrywide mess over i think it was beat to death by fox in the spring but the banking committee is supposed to take up regulatory reform in the spring possibly bringing it up again. flip side when health reform is signed dodd well be in the picture plus the President is big in CT and well help dodd

DE open -- i know castle is running but he is dull plus he has a 14 year house voting record including support for the iraq war, the bush tax cuts, gingrich as speaker, the contract on america. also de is probally the only state where tv advertising is waist of money. so it door to door and energy beau biden has it plus the vp well campaign for him.

CA Boxer if boxer where a better campaigner this would be safe.

PA --- people at dinners and rallies across the state are telling me the 2 things sestak is great and specter is old really old. Many D's have been impressed with Sestak's energy and knowledege and been left flat by Specter. on the other side specter has nailed down almost all of the county and state parties. these people did deliver for Hillary Clinton. however hillary was a helluva lot more effective campaigner than specter is. Also how involved does the president want to be in a primary. although do ahve one issue in voting for sestak my vote being construed by fox news as a vote against the president. Specter's health is the ultimate factor here if specter where 60 rather than 80 he would be in good shape. I have  heard increasing specualtion that at the first of the year specter well retire because of his health  Toomey is crap. great he raised 1.5 mil. he also has a voting record that makes santorumn look liberal. Toomey is toast

NH-- Ayotte also has self destruction written all over her. hodes is an effective campaigner also hsi voting record is write inline with nh

    Tossup

MO - blunt has self destruction written all over him. however MO is basically republican state. I still see carnahan pushing ahead

Fl - open Kendrick Meek is a good candidate that has some of obamas best organizers working for him plus Rubio is going to win the gop primary. if i am wrong crist well have done butt load of flip flops that well haunt him in the fall.

OH -- this well be all about the economy. well portman get his deserved blame? How ugly well the d primary get.

NV -- 2010 is not 2004 Nevada is also much more liberal than SD. and 2 years of obstructionism from daschle plus the fact that R would have held the senate  w daschle winning all contributed to daschles defeat plus w ensign's resignation imminent neveda well lose tremendous seniority.

co i do not know enough

my sleeper tx i think the tx gop well be split by perry v hutchinson which well cripple any r.
